Should Palauan college grads return home?

Ok, what do you all think Palauan college graduates (from abroad) should do? Should they return home and contribute their new found knowledge? What I'm trying to say is: is there an obligation that needs to be fulfilled which is to go home and help our country? Perhaps a sense of duty? Or it doesn't matter at all. Voice it out!

Hello, to me I say yes. When i grads next year for my R.N degree i will go home, so i can help with people back home.I can also takes care of my family and my relative. I miss home and i dont intend to stay here in the U.S.,They need me there and even they dont pay enough it doesn't matter. To me there is no place like home. And i do have cousins who got there Masters and B.A. and moved to palau, hoping that will get a job and help but that's not what happened ,they said that it's hard to get Gov,job cause lot of people are hiring there family even though they are not qualified for the job.maybe that is going to effect some grads in the future.

Definitely! I feel a sense of duty to my country in hopes of helping out the people and the community. But in doing so, I think the government should do something about securing work for graduates abroad and better pay. Palauans who graduate tend to prefer staying where they are and making a living because they make so much MORE money, than back home. But our government is suffering already so I guess it won't be fair to demand them such. But returning home to help and be part of the workforce to help in making the community better in spite of lousy wages should always be a priority. Come on, tia beluad so we should have a sense of duty to our family, our elders, and our community.

First of all, once we graduate from high school, our goal is to achieve a higher education outside of Palau with the notion that we will return to help improve our Government and its people. Secondly, we are raised to adhere to our culture and its traditions and we are obligated to come back and preserve and protect it. Lastly, we are palauans and we want our Palau to be the best of the best.
BUT, what is holding us back from home? Should we finish our education and return back home. Yes we must. But what is holding us back? Namely the economy of Palau is very very weak. How can we come home to support our family, our relatives, our government when the money is not there? NO money No can do.
We should go back and be a part of the movement to improve and restore our Palau. But yet again, WE NEED MONEY to entice us back.
Mahalo!

I think a follow-up question is when do college grad return home? When we go out of Palau to achieve higher education we also accumulate debts that we need to take care before going back home. We also want to gain some experience to bring us back home for a college degree can't really stand alone by itself. I've heard alot of people say they'll go back to palau but don't know just when. I think college grad shouldn't be pressured to go back home. Go back when you think you are capable to contribute.

Alii, yeah I think we should go back home after we graduate, so we can help our family as they support us after these and that is why we can further our education...But the thing is, if only they can increase the salary for those who have their degrees and lower the ones who only make coffees....lol...

Yes I am all pushing for the young well educated Palauans to go back home and work and help. But..but we all know all kinds of issues that happening in Belau. Like the other one that put out the comment only hiring the relatives and the well educated people who left the island to persue the education are left behind to the curve just to do the "makit; and fishing. Yes too the money we earn won't support our lives back home as you guys know siukang, out ra SLC, rock island and etc that you think it is fun. Even fishing is hard cause the fuel is expensive not unless you take the bamboo raft. My education require Continue Education to keep my liscense which the government won't or bearly paid for me to fly out of the island to keep me up to date. But instead the government is willing to pay for the people to fly with president to South Cali and Portland, Or or somewhere else to get their party on... You know when sending the party people not only airline ticket but permium, hotel , and food....
Even so the money they paid us is not enough for us to pay our loans which I repeatly applied for Palau Scholarships and grant and denied so many times which I got tired of applying and got a loan to pay for my school. I think the board members of Scholarship Board should be replaced or put the recommandation to OEK to make the criterea for the applicant. Here we are all in the state and we are tring to make it thru the day buy going to school and work at the same time. You it hard sometimes to be a full time student and work at the same time.( BILLS ) As I see it the only rich and wealthy Palauan kids got the scholarships and other type of financial to pay for the school.
The student at PCC in tems of scholarships and grant they should be limited to total amount of money. I know I was at PCC and the financial aide did pay for my education and the scholarships I got was party money. I am feeling bad for doing that but I just telling the truth. For us that in the state desperately need the money get denied but the student that their education is paid get the free money.

This is just my opion but I think I had said what I hope to say. Thanks for you time.....

God Bless

If only the Palauan government helped me with my collage education... They didn't do nothing to help me. I tried for the longest time to get some scholarships but couldn't. The only people who got the scholarships were the one's who had connections. I had to work my ass off for loans and grants from the US to help me with collage. SO SINCE I DIDN'T GET NOTHING FOR MY EDUCATION, DON'T EXPECT NOTHING FROM ME!!! Trips me out how the kids and relatives of government officials got all the scholarships and the rest of the people are just forgoten. The only time I heard about scholarships is when someone got accepted for it and it's unavailable no more. The Government sucks!

The question is should college grads return home. It is an individual choice. We all go off to college to seek higher educations. Hoping to better our lives, our kids lives as well as our parents lives some day. Some of us think returning home fulfills those obligations. Others think otherwise. There is no right or wrong answers. It also depends on financial, personal needs as well as individual values. Some of us do want to come home regardless of much money we will make. We just want to come home with our knowledge and experiences to try to make a difference. But it is difficult and frustrating when there is nepotism everywhere. Nepotism in the government, in the work place and even in dispursing scholarships. Sons and daughters of the wealthy and powerful get scholarship. But those we need it the most do not. It is the sons and daughters of the working poor. We all want what is best for our country. Another obstacle is change. College grads bring new ideas and they come with change. It seems to me that we want to live in the past. The customs I think is another blockage for college grads to return home. The purpose of these customs if I am not mistaken is to help the poor. At close observation, we tend to give more money to those who have more and less to those who have none. It is becoming a burden on the poor. Some college grads think living aboard makes them happy and fulfill their needs. It suits them and their family. That is okay. Others have conflict of the life they knew versus the life they have now. At the end it is all about being happy and with peace with your life. thank you

Hello, i would say its up to us, i mean its not about gettinh scholarship, loans, financial aid, and etc. If you want have a better live one day you work so hard for it, going back home, its totally up to you, i see alot of palauans where im at going to school full time students work at least 15 or 20 hours a day and make it. We palauans who stuck in US are the one's making good money or decide to live here, our parents told us go out there bom try el di kemiu el mengisemuch era delengchekliu dont depend on us, try to live life on your own, i mean you look back and your like thanks to my mom and dad for teaching me how to be independent. Going back home for what i miss home but the way you see it people without education have a better job than the one's that educated graduate with degrees and all. What we need to do is ongesecheklii a minimum wage $2.50 an hour, man its not worth it to graduate e mor belau. Ok, merma house party they send you an invitation me ke mong the hell with that you want a house pay your god damn house ok, Like i said its up to you fellow palauans if you want to go back go back, its you life and its your decision. if kau a ngalek era skuul el chad er belau you get scholarship e graduate damn i am really proud of you but if your palauan e melai a scholarship e di tela el years eke drop out working in McDonald's or Wendy's, you didnt deserve era scholarship cause there are lots of palauan struggling in skuul and they need scholarship to continue el melai era education er ngii. so that's it for now. Sulang this is just how i feel about it.

You need to update the blog. Is there going to be a new topic of discussion soon? Nice idea to do this type of discussion blog.

On the note about "Should Palauan college grads return home?" It's a personal choice and as I've read there are various reasons related to the fact that it is "home" so naturally one wants to go back home at some point in time.

Then there are those who feel that the pay, as pointed out is Yikes! starts at $2.50 minimum wage? Can someone verify that for us. Wow! Now that is very unappealing! But then again, if we can live off of the land, work minimum wage, and have family members share their taro and fish, bananas, etc... I think we can survive over there. It's not like we're going to live in the mainland. It's a small group of "islands" in the pacific ocean, for goodness sakes! So I think we can survive.

Two things: do we have sales tax over there? Is there free public medical care? Do we have property tax? There are certain things that I think we can manage when deciding, if we do, as graduates, to make ends meet.

So if there is "fear" of going back, for me, it would be boredom. That is all! I would be bored out of my mind if I couldn't get online and learn and connect with others outside of the country. I guess I could spend time at the public library and pour over books, so yeah, I guess I could retire there some time ahead in the future. I can do that.

But anyway, I have run longer than I meant to.

keep strong and survive wherever you find yourself, whether in or out of the country, and make us proud...

fellow palauan

yes..one should if they don't have substantial amount of student loan to pay back. at $2.50 per hour it'll take a person a lifetime to pay all that back. not to mention our customes that i call "abused customes" is getting out of hand. our government is big joke with its current structure....toooo big for a tiny island.
as for me...i only come to visit and that's sufficient for me.

Alii..This are just my ideas and i hope it does not offend anyone..
I think that we should go back home when we finish our educational career..Because first off ,i don't feel the same love here that i get from our homeland Palau..The love in palau just feels so real and genuine .Also,we need to go back by the time when we are successful to help our government to keep our origin alive..But most importantly our family, relatives and friends..We need to go back and stay and enjoy our life back home...I just think that its important that a Rengelekel A Beluu Ra Belau returns, because it will contribute to whatever it is that will help our homeland....

Interesting subj.

Why get a higher education and make an uneducated decision. Belau and the whole government is so messed up im almost ashamed of it. Yes we are human beings and we would like to help our families and our country but with the way things are back home it's just hard. Do this though, ask your parents if they want you to go back and offer your services or if they rather you guys get better jobs and opportunities outside and have a better life then they have/had and not to struggle as much as they did. Someone said that only the rich kids or families are the ones getting all the financial help from the government. So sad that it's a true statement. I'm just saying that think about yourself for a change, we grew up in a place where people, even stangers come first before us. But that mentality though not bad, needs to change a little. Be selfish but in a good and right way. Think about your future and the future of your family of the family you will have. Im pretty sure when you ask your parents about what they want you to do, id say 99% of them will tell you this. "Rungalek, bai di ngar tilechang em sikii a urelem. Ke mei me ke di mengebuul, ea siukang e di bekl el sandei...."

Belau will always be there. It will wait for you no matter how long your away.

Dont forget that Home is where you make it too. I've lived away from Belau for almost 15 years and though it is the home in my heart this second home is not too bad... not at all.
