It's recruiting time for the U.S. Army.

The U.S. Army is in Palau right now recruiting and conducting the ASVAB test. What do you all think about our Palauan brothers and sisters being sent to fight in a war that's arguably pointless? Of course we owe and give them great respect, but is this war even worth risking lives for, not American lives but Palauan lives? It's a controversial issue but I just want to put it out there.

If our palauan brothers and sisters have the resources to go to college, then the U.S. Army wouldn't be an option. Often times, becoming a soldier is the only way to earn money for college and if you are an 18 year old fresh out of high school that option of becoming a soldier can be very attractive. They are not joining with the goal to help the U.S. fight terrorism. It's the bonus and the "leaving belau" on a free ticket that they are attracted to. What do you think??

wow! right on anon2! i think that's true. joining the military is probably the only way a lot of palauan kids can go abroad to the land of milk and honey. but is it worth risking their lives for? we have already lost 1 last summer. however i don't see it as the young 18/19 yr old kids' fault but something that our government should pay close attention to. i mean our scholarship system is grap! the money's small, however it could pay a lot of colleges in the states, the problem is the people working and running the system. It takes forever! i had to drop all my classes a few semesters ago because they didn't send the grant on time. i gave up on depending on our government for scholarships. it seems like the rich kids (Palauans) get the best deals. my point is, our opportunities are limited by the government's incompetence; thus forcing a lot of palauan kids to join the military. no wonder a lot of palauan college grads don't return home.

U.S Army ain't that bad. If you have a brave heart and a strong stomach for it, why not? It gets you out of that honto you've been living in all your life. It gets a lot of bills paid, and it gets you places where your mom and dad didn't even know it exists on a map.

Joining the Army isn't that bad at all. Not all people are into collages and universities...Even if you have the money for it, some people just don't like that stuff. Army isn't just a job, it's an adventure. But, if you're joining, make sure you do your best. It's not just one of those things that you can fool around and get over it. I recomend that if you're joining just to get out of the island then don't do it at all. Army is about pride and patriotism...Don't just join for the money cause it ain't that good at all. Join for the adventure.

go for air force or the navy..

Honestly, I think its sad...I know that the army is just another job. If it helps you pay bills and care for your family then go for it. But I admire those who made the commitment to go for reasons on caring for family. Its a big sacrifice...
Then again, yeah, some people just see it as a ticket out of Palau...And I don't blame them, because it is an opportunity...
And I agree with the messed up system we have back home so a lot of people think that joining the armed forces is the only way to survive...

And what do you make of Palauan Americans who are in the military? Obviously they're not in it for the free ticket to the states since they were born there. I believe that the military situation is different for Palauans born in the US because they are attached to both cultures.

I agree with anonymous (see above). I really don't know the motives in which Palauans (born and raised in Palau) want to join the Armed Forces. I agree that Palauans (born and raised in the U.S) have a sense of duty and dedication to the U.S. In all fairness, it is really up to an individual to decide to enlist in the Army or not. All we can do, is tell them what it is like to be in the Army and support them...adang mekerang?

I agree with all previously said comments and I respect each and every opinion that have been stated under this topic or issue.

However, I believe that....Palauan blood is much more valuable than oil...actually, it's priceless.

But what can I do but pray for their health and safety....let's all pray for our friends and relatives and loved ones in the military.

May God bless them and may He watch over all of us Palauans.

I agree with some of the previous comments. First, I am happy that Palauans are free to choose whether to join the U.S Army or not. Second, I agree that by joining the Army is an alternative way to go out the oppressing situation in Belau. At least in the Army, there no such things as connections as we see in it in our gov't. and scholarship board, or even PCC. Third, I often wonder if those you choose to serve in the Military and are involved in the WAR ON TERRORISM ...are they (even young Americans) accurately well informed about the US military system, Idealism, and History? The US is land of opportunity, democracy, capitalism and freedom but what is the underlying cost of all of these? High school history classes are not enough to base any decisions or opinions on especially regarding America History or the U.S. I love Palauans very much and I don't want to loose them esp. when they are really young to a War and Nation that does not love them much as I do? What I mean by loosing them can be death, disabled, and PTSS or even mental disorders. There has been evidence based research on Military PTSS. Thank you and God bless Belau and her people esp. those who are in the military. Pls pray for them always.

too dangerous. army = ground fighting (meaning- u die 1st).... join something simple- like air force. but u will best off staying home. alternatively- consider peace corp if u wanna travel. they have a nice website- look it up.

I honestly think that joining the army is suicidal. We can or at least I can come up with alot of disadvantage in the army... but when you as an individual make a choice to join or be part of it...There is really no power of the government to say no. But it's true.... our government is corrupted in alot of ways. They tell us all this good news about how Palau is independent and strong in many ways... The truth is; majority of the people in the government in palau is lying to the community....The whole government is like a trash can... you may paint it to make it look nice on the outside but yet the idea of the trash can is, you put trash in... so, it may look good but as soon as you open that cover you see trash... our government is full of trash.....lol

I think that it isn't our (Palauans) war and that we shouldn't put ourselves at risk for something that we most likely won't benefit from.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the military or the Palauans that enlist. As a matter of fact, I applaud them for their courage and bravery and all that good stuff. I just think that it's pointless to put a Palauan in fatigues, hand him/her a gun and send them off to do other people's dirty work.

ok..i think it's a very good idea to join da army coz to be honest there's really nothing in palau...all of do is get up go to work, have lunch and go back to work and then the day is over so we all go home at 430pm do some dinner go to sleep...it's da same old shit everyday unless sumbody dies then we have to do a lot of that culture shit and traditions...i say join the army...explore and experience a lot of things...yes some of them die in combat but it's not your choice or their choice...its god's will....and to be honest im talking from experience coz im a soldier myself....

I don't think that many of the palauans who joined the military had any options to begin with. Who wants to spend the rest of their lives making 3.50 an hour? How can you make a living with that? On the other hand, there are many options that they ignore. Ultimately, the military is the way for them to get out of Palau and make a living. It's also the easy way out for them so to speak. I mean... what happened to going to college and obtaining a rewarding career that you actually love? It's possible! why? Because I was in Palau where I thought my life wasn't going anywhere. Left palau, went to school, and now have a really good job making good money more than most in the military. So why aren't people choosing other paths? It is because they actually have to work hard to get to where they want to be? I really don't know and I can't speak for the whole population. They're basically gambling with their lives. Sometimes... dying is not worth all the military benefits the recruiters bribe them with. It really isn't... I often find out a lot of my classmates joined the military and it is somewhat heart breaking. Ng life er tir so ak sure that they weighed their options, and joined the military fully understanding what they were getting in to. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate all the soldiers palauans included who are shedding blood everyday for us. I just don't think that palauans should think that the military is the only way they could make it in life.

What is all this mess about the Army? LOL all in all, I joined the Navy just to get the hell out of Guam, my only ticket out of the island. I went in for the wrong reasons but all made sense to me after awhile. I had money in my pocket, living in my own apt, and living the life... I later learned that the Navy is changing.. I had to clean up my act, got serious about making rank and getting some education. It's all what you make it to be ladies and gentlemen. You get the good and the bad, nothing comes without a price. Yes there is a WAR going on, get that fact straight in your head and go from there. Life is like a box of.. LOL j/j my fellow Palauans. I love you all and hope to meet you all out in the Fleet.
